Chickens

I am a new chicken keeper. I got the chicks about 4 weeks ago and they are growing like crazy. And that means they need a bigger home. I decided to be creative and resourceful in building this coop, using materials I already have. I started with a purchased plan and used that as a suggestion, really. So far, I have used 3 doors and one bed frame and leftover roofing metal.

Yep, I did that! Almost by myself because someone told me it was in my skill set, lol. And someone else told me I can do hard things. Well, by golly, it’s happening! Very soon, I will paint it all one color and then post another update. I am trying so very hard to build all the features they need, being the responsible chicken keeper and all. The next big phase is building a run because in this area there are too many predators. Pepper sniffs and drools, too.

This is their playpen for some fresh air. At 6 weeks, they should be ready for the real, big kid coop. I have a total of 6: 2 are Amercauna , 2 are Buff Orpingtons, and 2 are Barred Rock (I think one is a roo). They will produce brown and blue eggs in 5 or 6 months. (And poop, they produce a lot of poop.)

In this process, I have learned a few things about myself. I almost never get as much done in a day as I think I will. I really am not a perfectionist. I should never build a house for humans. I am fine with done and good enough. I can learn new things. I actually can do hard things.

So, how about you? What was your latest challenge?

Not the crazy chicken lady yet,

Kelley
